One of the things I love most about homeschooling my kids is having the time to teach them skills for every day living. It’s so important for kids to learn how to be productive adults and where better to learn than at home? I always tell my kids that I am trying to work myself out of a job. If they can run my house they will have no problem running their own after they leave home.
My oldest, at age 15, is awesome in the kitchen, there isn’t anything he cannot do! Because of this, my next 2, at 13 and 10, haven’t had a lot of practice baking and cooking. They know that if they don’t want their turn in the kitchen, Nick will take it, because he loves being in there. After some hilarious episodes (that I promised her I would never mention) in the kitchen by the 13 year old, I decided it was time to concentrate on teaching her some kitchen skills.

Children’s Meal Planner
I decided to start with just planning a meal. Once a week each child has to plan and make a whole meal with as minimal help from me. I designed this Children’s Meal Planner printable to help them with their plans. They get to make whatever they want, but it has to be healthy.
After a while they get to start to make up the weekly menu for the family. They LOVE this! This is the week we never have any meals they don’t like 😉 It’s only been in the last couple of years that I have really used a weekly menu consistently. We are eating much healthier because we have a plan. Also, I cannot believe how money we save using a menu. We only buy what we need, so we aren’t wasting money on food that won’t be used. And we aren’t making a dozen extra stops at the store during the week, because you know that you don’t go in a store and only buy the item you came for…
I designed the Weekly Menu printable to be used two ways; 1) to be printed out and written on or 2) you can fill it out on your computer and then print it out. I love the second option. It allows me to save a different version of the menu each week and when I feel I have enough variety, I can start reusing them, tweaking here and there when necessary. This saves me so much time and who doesn’t need a little extra time on those busy homeschooling days.
I hope you will enjoy these printables as much as our family does!
